Pomegranate juice

Hi Guys

Does anyone know where you can purchase concentrated pomegranate juice and how much you need to take on daily basis, I have heard it can slow prostate cancer down and kill cancer cells

Frank, I have been consuming Pomegranate juice for almost 8 years and initially drank 250ml daily of Suncrest Pomegranate juice as this was the most economic unconcentrated product available but for a number of years since Suncrest stopped supplying it in 1lt bottles I've had to rely on the "own brand" concentrated juice drink that comes in 1lt cartons and available in most supermarkets.

I have stuck with Aldi's Rio Doro Pomegranate juice drink for a couple of years now as this one has all the "bits" left in it as opposed to the other supermarket brands which are "clear" and I suspect over processed.

Admittedly, all the carton type pomegranate juice drinks have added sugar and are mixed with various other berry juices to enhance the flavour but most have 30% of concentrated Pomegranate juice as the main ingredient and I have had to settle for this as an alternative to the vastly more expensive unconcentrated variants available i.e POM.

I'm hopeful that I've been doing the right thing these last few years since changing from the pure stuff to the concentrated alternative and believe that the juice I am drinking is still relatively high in the antioxidants/polyphenols.  Only time will tell.

I doubt if I shall ever stop drinking Pomegranate juice as it has become an indispensable part of the psychological armoury of diet and lifestyle changes I made 8 years ago and to remove just one weapon from that armoury might just be the undoing of a successful battle plan!

As for the various tablet extract forms of Pomegranate, I've never given them any thought as I can't see how all the processing that goes into converting the Pomegranate fruit into a tablet does the vital ingredients any good.

There's no good proof either help with P.Ca. There's no proof or anything I've heard of that says they do harm.

The only caveat is that many juices contain too much sugar. Which adds to the too much sugar in our diets.

P.Ca. doesn't feed off sugar. But sugar does clog up the immune system.

Corn oil  is bad stuff. As would be cranberry oil rather than juice or dried extract.

Far better is to juice vegetables + a little fruit such as a few cranberry berries etc. at home. Dilute with pure water if too strong.

All of which I have been lax with & must resume http://community.prostatecanceruk.org/editors/tiny_mce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-embarassed.gif

There have been suggestions not to take juices & some supplements during & just after Radiotherapy. The antioxidants are thought to help the P.Ca. survive the R/T by giving some protection. I'm not sure about during chemo ( for same reasons).

Otherwise, there are a lot less healthy drinks available to buy.

Welcome to the forum pomegranate 1000.

I'm sure I speak for my fellow forumites when I say we all take the health of ourselves and our loved ones seriously.

We post here to share our own personal experiences and thoughts on PCa and strive not to advise others on any form of treatment.

Perhaps you may wish to share your own experiences of how you believe pomegranate products have helped you in some way!

Hello Pom1000

""The "Pom " juice, so recommended in this forum, is a concentrated juice yet many posters are saying that it isn't !""

""Things such as "Pom" is not from concentrated.""

Confused we are , yourself generating further misinformation.
I'll stick to the SiNess lager diet.

Ideally you want to avoid the juices made from concentrate and buy pure pomegranate juice instead. You can buy Pom in most supermarkets - it is a little more expensive than the 'from concentrate' versions that tesco etc sell under their own brands. You can also buy proper pomegranate juice from good health food shops. John alternates between Pom and cranberry juice.

I don't think there is any research to support the idea that pomegranate kills cancer cells but plenty to suggest that it helps control PCa.

POM is expensive but over the last few months I have found some good offers on it in the supermarkets so worth shopping round, at least you are getting the proper stuff, instead of 2% concentrate and lots of sugar in the juice drinks.

POM is the best I've found and as Zarissa says, the price seems to fluctuate from week to week - so I buy in bulk (x4!) when the price dips!

I sometimes dilute it too - which probably defeats the object.

I take the POM brand. I mix it with red grape juice. I've found that Waitrose usually do a reduction once in a while and I stock up at that time. I also drink pure red grape juice from Lidle (good price). The top three anti oxidants are Pomegranate, Red grape juice and Red wine.

Lynne talked about Cranberry juice, but I'm sure I read that whilst it's good for the bladder, you shouldn't take it if you have Prostate cancer?

I always thought cranberry juice helped in the fight against PCa so I also would like to hear other members thought on the subject. I am now drinking 8fl oz POM daily dont know if it will work but helps me psychologically.

Which way DO we go?

Just been having a closer look at the labelling on Pom Wonderful and see that it is made from a concentrate.

Given the price of the stuff I was under the impression that the contents was unconcentrated pomegranate juice.

I'm going to give the Biona brand of pomegranate juice a go which is made from unconcentrated juice and no additives whatsoever.

Cheapest I can find online  is £3.86 a litre and free delivery.

p.s. I'm making the change back to unconcentrated because Aldi have stopped stocking the brand I used to purchase (made from concentrated) and as all the rest in other supermarkets are mixed with water and other juices, it seemed a good time to go back to the pure stuff.

Biona do a 100% Cranberry Juice but it is scarcely expensive and in fact it's twice the cost of the 100% Pomegranate juice they produce.

You will find details of the product here: http://www.biona.co.uk/product-244-4.html

and one of the companies that sells it:  http://www.thehealthbay.com/biona-organic-pure-cranberry-juice-750ml.html

Updated.  Dave, I think you will find The Health Bay do it cheaper if you buy the 750ml bottle and they offer free next day delivery via DPD who are one of the better courier services.

p.s. I've got 15 bottles of the Pomegranate juice being delivered tomorrow and I'll let you know how it is (assuming anyone is interested)http://community.prostatecanceruk.org/editors/tiny_mce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif
