Alternative natural remedies

User
Posted 13 Jun 2018 at 20:51

I just wanted to find out if many men have given alternatives ago? For example cannibis oil?

Also I know tumeric extract, pomegranates, organic grapes, frozen lemons (including the peel), dandelion root, green tea, omega 3 and many more.

I just wanted to find out what people think about using alternatives and if anyone has?

Thank you,

Steve Jobs - multi-millionaire, able to buy the best prostate cancer treatment in the world - rejected all traditional treatments in favour of alternative therapies. He died.

There is some research now on things like pomegranate, garlic / alium, broccoli, soya and oily fish helping men with advanced PCa by slowing progression but only in conjunction with mainstream treatments. If you are interested in supportive diet, treat yourself to the Prostate Care Cookbook by the Prostate Cancer Research Foundation (avaialble on Amazon) which explains the differences between research on diet for curative PCa, advanced PCa and for boys and young men to protect them from PCa in the future.

I agree with all the above - conventional consultant led treatment first, then top up with other random self meds as felt necessary, though always check with the consultant first to make sure it doesn't negate the main treatment. Cannabis oil is so unknown - what size does, THC or CBD, how often, how is it taken, what strength etc. Very uncertain!

I've tried the turmeric approach, but it's not for me. Others love it. My only additions are Vitamin D3 50ug and aspirin 75mg daily. Who's to know if it helps?!

Not pedantic - I am glad of the correction as I always thought it had been PCa. There was a thread on here about him at the time he died; it provoked a lot of discussion about the Plant diet.

It's one thing to use "alternative remedies" to deal with symptoms (eg I know acupuncture works really well as a method of pain relief for some), but I think you'd need to be a complete fruitcake to reject mainstream medical care in favour of "alternatives" when it comes to curative treatments!

Not sure about alternative meds but since Gary’s been on low dose of sleeping pills he’s stopped snoring 😴

I think I’ve benefited more then him

Chemo doesn’t necessarily make the PSA fall so don’t panic if the number stays the same or even goes up a bit - it is the cancer cells screaming an objection to being attacked.

The hormones should however bring the PSA down quite rapidly - has he actually started on hormones?

Thank you for your reply he has finished his course of hormones and had one intense session of radiotherapy on his back as it has spread just to his lower back but every where else is cancer free, Chemo is starting next month.

We didn’t want to know the grade of cancer or life span as they predict it. I don’t believe someone even a doctor can give a time scale on life. I do believe a lot of it is your mind set and well being along with the correct treatment and any alternatives that help.

There's no such thing as 'alternative' medicine only medicine that works and medicine that doesn't. When something is proven to work it just becomes medicine. I'd recommend Quack Watch to help sort the wheat from the chaff. There are way too many quacks and charlatans peddling nonsense to cancer patients. At best they do nothing to help at worst they cause grave harm.

Tumeric is meant to be good, my OH was diagnosed last November and he is trying it but we will probably never know if it works or not as this cancer is so variable from person to person. I did check with the Oncologist first to make sure it would not affect any treatment he was given, she said it was OK for him.

I would always make sure that any 'natural' or alternative therapies are OK with the consultant first, especially herbal medicine as some can have a negative impact on other treatment.

I would definitely not take anything like cannabis oil in place of Hormone Treatment or Chemo if it is offered, despite what you read on the internet about it being a miracle cure, there is no medical evidence to back these claims.

I am all for alternative medicine, but not at the cost of conventional medicine, especially with something as serious as this.

My husband takes daily aspirin, calcium plus D3 and glucosamine but he checked with his specialist prior to taking them

I also support the medical view there is no effective 'alternative treatment' to the recognised medical ones. However, certain 'supplemental' dietry things may help. Some consultants consider Pom juice worth trying and tomatoes, especially fried are advocated by some amongst other foods. Best to run anything by your consultant though if making changes.

Our hospital provides acupuncture for men on HT to reduce the impact of hot flushes. Well, it used to but the funding has just been cut.

It is fine to see that I am not alone with my view point that alternative medicines have no potential to cure, and only make desperate people to be fooled.

Many studies revailed that alternative treatment don't work. It provides false hope to desperate people against in many cases hughe costs.

Thank you for all the responses

How are people finding chemotherapy? As there is no guarantee of shrinking the cancer I am looking for some positive outcomes? Does your PSA level come down dramatically?

My Dad starts chemo next month every 21 days. I know every individual reacts differently I am just hoping Dad responds well after all he has age on his side and is also really fit and healthy. All of this is still such a shock to my family, all so much to take in.

I reckon they are all a waste of money, but would need extensive testing by you to prove it or not.

But definitely not INSTEAD of proper medication.

User
Posted 12 Oct 2018 at 19:13
You prove it your self with your statement "not instead of proper medication" I am aware that my post here here looks arrogant. It would be very nice that in the alternative circuit cure for this terrible disease could be provided. Unfortunately it never did.

I remember my late friend Barry Sheene, the motorcycle racing ace who moved to Australia to try and ameliorate his arthritic pain from numerous crashes and orthopaedic plates and pin interventions.

Whilst there he contracted cancer yet eschewed conventional medicine and instead adopted a diet based on liquefied cabbage, or something similar.

He died........
