Advice needed for advance prostate cancer

My dad has been diagnosed with advance prostate cancer spread to lymph nodes and bones, his PSA is 1200!!! He's started hormone therapy!
Can we expect him to leave hospital at any time? How long are we looking at, weeks?months? I'm new to this and very scared for him!!

hi Kelly

you mention dad is in hospital I take it is because of his PCa, his high PSA does not mean it is life threatening we have blokes on here who have higher and still around

you do not mention if dad has had a biopsy to get his Gleason score, this is measured in 1 - 10 with 10 being the highest

mine has gone to my bones diagnosed one year ago this month, I am on hormone therapy, best thing to do is read info on folks on here click on avatars it will tell you all about them

have a chat with the specialist nurses on here they will help you loads

the trouble with PCa is it affects us all differently

I assume dad already has had some scans as you say it has spread to bone and lymph nodes

the hormone therapy is to help control the spread/growth by stopping the testosterone in your body, this will make dad more emotional

if dad will let you go with him on his hospital visits as you will then hear first hand want the plan is

Hello Kelly and welcome to the site.

As nidge and Lyn (on your other post) have said, there is much that can be done so don't start assuming your dad will never leave hospital.

Look up Yorkhull and Trevor Boothes profiles for reassurance.

You will find them under members

Thanks so much for your reply, he is in hospital due to a broken bone in his back, due to the cancer, which is how we found out about his PC, this was on Monday so all very new to us.
He hasn't had a biopsy done as the urologist said there was no need, due to his high PSA levels and scan results on his bones, he said its full gone conclusion it's PC. When we were told on Monday we assumed he had only a matter of weeks left, but reading thoroughly about it I see this is not the case (thank goodness).
Due to him being in hospital and us only allowed to visit at visiting times we miss a lot of the information given to him, and he is not taking everything in at the moment, as you can imagine, it's very frustrating for us as want/need to know what's happening but there's rarly anyone around who knows! I've Alison read that having chemo at the start with the hormone therapy gives him a better outlook , so really want to discuss this with his oncologist, but again never around .

Contact the oncologists secretary and ask how you can discuss this with them
Provided your dad is prepared to go this route

Hi Kelly

It sounds very much like what we re told when my FIL was admitted to hospital in November, with severe back problems, which we were told was a broken back.

It turned out to be compression on his spine from cancer nodules but after a few courses of radiotherapy, the nodules shrunk back and his back is now ok, albeit he does still have pain killers.

As well as HT, he is now receiving chemo, and had his third session last week with no major side effects so far. His PSA score is now down to 5, from 360 odd originally.

Like you, my wife and I were very worried initially and thought similar timescales as you, but we now know much more about PCa from both this site and the Onco, and my FIL is getting on with life and making the most of things, albeit taking things a little easier than he used to.

He's just been out and bought a new car, new furniture, carpets etc and waiting for his last chemo session so he can book a holiday.

Hi Kelly,
It is all so scary when we first get the diagnosis, I hope our story will give you hope Trevor was diagnosed in 2013 with a PSA of 13000 spread to bones and lymph nodes plus kidney. Here we still are 3 years on this May . Trevor also didn't have a biopsy .
When we first hear the C word our minds go into panick and automatically we think of time frames but many men can and do live for years with the many and varied treatments .
